Should Caribbean Influencers Be More Cautious With Their Content?

Caribbean influencers can mirror a lot about our society, proudly showcasing our food, music, humour, and everyday life. They’ve helped shape how both locals and the world perceive our culture online. But as social media grows more powerful, a pressing question emerges: how much responsibility do influencers hold for the content they create, particularly when it touches on sensitive or controversial issues?

Reflecting vs. Promoting

It’s almost impossible to scroll through Caribbean social media without seeing skits, memes, or discussions about topics like “horning”, “licks”, or other cultural norms. For many creators, this type of content resonates because it feels authentic, and it reflects lived experience.

Yet, there is a delicate line between reflecting society and promoting certain behaviours. While humour and exaggeration are staples of Caribbean storytelling, what once might have been a private joke among friends can now be broadcast to hundreds of thousands of followers. Suddenly, a clip about spanking a child or normalising infidelity is no longer just entertainment; it carries the weight of influence.

Audience Engagement: Are We All Responsible?

It’s easy to place the responsibility solely on influencers, but audiences play an equally significant role. Social media thrives on engagement, likes, shares, comments, and reactions. When audiences reward controversial or shocking content, they indirectly shape the type of content that is produced.

In that sense, the popularity of videos or posts about sensitive subjects reflects not just the creator’s choices but also what the public wants to see. The audience, knowingly or unknowingly, validates and amplifies these behaviours. This creates a cycle: influencers post content that gains attention, and attention encourages more similar content.

Take, for example, the TikTok videos about “licks.” Many Caribbean people can relate, but it raises a valid question: are these videos simply reflecting a shared experience, or are they unintentionally normalising a behaviour that continues to spark national debate?

Navigating Sensitive Topics

Does this mean influencers should avoid controversial topics entirely? Not necessarily. Highlighting societal issues can spark important conversations, even uncomfortable ones. The key is intentionality.

There is a meaningful difference between showing something to question it versus showing it to normalise it. A skit about a parent disciplining a child could explore the harm of traditional punishment, rather than glorifying it. A comedy about infidelity could examine its emotional toll instead of treating it as harmless fun. Influencers who thoughtfully frame content can both entertain and educate, without perpetuating harmful norms.

The Power of Influence

Influencers in the Caribbean occupy a unique space; they are entertainers, educators, and cultural ambassadors simultaneously. Some creators have successfully used their platforms to spark dialogue, highlight injustices, and inspire positive change while remaining true to their voice (although it would be wise to point out that these tend to be smaller influencers).

Their reach and relatability give them a cultural weight that traditional media rarely achieves.

As audiences engage, creators respond. But it’s a cycle that underscores the responsibility of both sides: influencers must be mindful of the content they produce, and audiences must consider the impact of what they endorse online. Social media is a reflection of our culture, but it is also a tool that shapes it.

Awareness Matters

Influencers are not just sharing jokes, meals, or personal experiences, they are shaping perceptions, behaviours, and even societal norms. In a region as expressive and vibrant as the Caribbean, the line between reflection and promotion will always be nuanced. But one truth remains: in many ways, influencers are actively shifting our culture. It’s important to be aware of who they are, what they share, and how audiences respond, because together, they define the stories we tell about ourselves.
